Hair Serum in Pakistan – What It Actually Does

Hair Serum in Pakistan
A hair serum does one job well and several jobs not at all, and knowing the difference will save you money.
It coats the outside of the hair — smoothing the cuticle so light reflects evenly and strands stop catching on each other. That is what makes hair look glossy and feel silky within seconds of applying it.
What it does not do is nourish, strengthen or repair. Those are jobs for oils, masks and time. A serum is cosmetic, and it works immediately, which is exactly why it feels more effective than it is.
Used with that understanding, a serum is one of the most useful things in a hair routine. Used as a substitute for actual hair care, it disappoints.
Serum, Oil or Tonic?
These three get confused constantly, and using the wrong one is why some people conclude none of them work.
| Serum | Oil | Tonic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applied to | Lengths and ends | Scalp and lengths | Scalp |
| When | After washing | Before washing | After washing |
| Wash out? | No | Yes | No |
| Job | Smooth, shine, protect | Nourish | Condition scalp |
| Works | Instantly | Over weeks | Over weeks |
Never apply serum to your scalp. It will make your roots look greasy within hours and does nothing useful there. Serum goes on the mid-lengths and ends only.
For the oil side of this, see our guide to choosing a hair oil.
What a Serum Is Actually For
- Frizz control. The main reason to own one, and the one it genuinely delivers on.
- Heat protection. Many serums form a barrier before a blow-dryer or straightener. If you heat-style, this alone justifies it.
- Detangling. A coated cuticle means less snagging, which means less breakage while combing.
- Shine. Immediate and visible.
- Split end appearance. It glues them together temporarily. It does not mend them — nothing does except cutting.
Frizz in Pakistani Humidity
Frizz is not random. Hair frizzes when the cuticle is raised and the air is humid — the hair absorbs moisture from the air, swells unevenly, and lifts.
That is why frizz is a different problem in Karachi than in Lahore. In coastal humidity, hair pulls moisture from the air all day and frizz builds continuously. In dry inland heat, the opposite happens — hair loses moisture and becomes brittle and static-prone rather than puffy.
For humid conditions: a silicone-based serum works better, because silicone forms a water-resistant seal that stops the hair absorbing moisture.
For dry conditions: a lighter argan or oil-based serum works better, because the goal is holding moisture in rather than keeping it out.
Silicone or Water-Based?
| Silicone-based | Water-based | |
|---|---|---|
| Frizz control | Stronger | Moderate |
| Shine | High | Natural |
| Build-up | Yes, over time | Minimal |
| Best for | Humidity, thick or coarse hair | Fine hair, daily use |
Silicones get criticised online, and the criticism is overstated. They are not damaging — they simply build up on the hair over weeks, which makes it feel heavy and stops other products absorbing.
The fix is a clarifying shampoo every two or three weeks. That resets it, and you carry on. If you have fine hair, build-up shows faster, so a water-based serum is the easier choice.
Do Keratin Serums Work?
Worth being straightforward about this one.
Keratin is the protein hair is made of, so a keratin product sounds like it should rebuild damaged hair. In practice, the keratin molecules in a serum are far too large to penetrate the hair shaft — they sit on the surface.
That is not useless. A protein coating smooths the cuticle, fills surface gaps in damaged hair, and makes hair feel stronger and look considerably better. The effect is real, and for many people it is exactly what they want.
But it is cosmetic and it washes out. A keratin serum will not undo damage from bleaching or heat. Nothing applied at home will.
Keratin masks work on the same principle with longer contact time — usually 10 to 20 minutes rather than seconds — so the surface effect is more pronounced and lasts a few washes rather than one.
Use them for what they do: hair that looks and feels better. Not as repair.
How to Apply — Less Than You Think
Over-application is the universal serum mistake. Too much and hair looks greasy and limp, which is the opposite of the point.
- Start with towel-dried, damp hair. Serum spreads far more evenly on damp hair than dry, so you need less.
- Two to three drops for short or fine hair. Four to six for long or thick. Start at the lower end.
- Warm it between your palms for a few seconds.
- Apply to the ends first, then work upward to the mid-lengths.
- Stop well short of the scalp. Roughly the bottom two-thirds of your hair, nothing above.
- Comb through with a wide-tooth comb to distribute.
- Then style. If you are using heat, the serum needs to be on first.
If your hair looks greasy afterwards, you used too much or applied too close to the roots. Halve the amount next time.

Common Mistakes
| Mistake | What happens |
|---|---|
| Applying to the scalp | Greasy roots within hours |
| Using too much | Limp, weighed-down hair |
| Applying to soaking wet hair | Dilutes and runs off |
| Applying to bone-dry hair | Uneven, patchy coating |
| Never clarifying | Silicone build-up, hair feels heavy |
| Expecting repair | Serums coat; they do not rebuild |
Where a Serum Fits in Your Routine
- Oil the scalp — once or twice a week, before washing
- Shampoo
- Conditioner on the lengths, or a keratin mask weekly
- Serum on damp mid-lengths and ends
- Style
Oil and serum are not alternatives — they do different jobs at different points. The oil feeds the scalp before washing; the serum protects the lengths after.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does hair serum actually do?
It coats the outside of the hair to smooth the cuticle — controlling frizz, adding shine, easing detangling and protecting against heat. It does not nourish or repair.
Can I use hair serum every day?
Yes, if you use a small amount and stay away from the scalp. Clarify every few weeks if you use a silicone-based one.
Should serum go on wet or dry hair?
Towel-dried and damp is best. It spreads more evenly, so you need less.
Does keratin serum repair damaged hair?
No. It coats the surface and fills gaps, which makes hair look and feel better. The keratin molecules are too large to enter the hair shaft. Real damage cannot be reversed at home.
Is silicone bad for hair?
No, but it builds up over weeks and makes hair feel heavy. A clarifying shampoo every two or three weeks resets it.
Can I use serum and oil together?
Yes. Oil the scalp before washing, serum on the lengths after. They do different jobs.
Will serum stop hair fall?
No. Serum works on the hair shaft, not the follicle. It can reduce breakage from combing, but it does not affect hair falling from the root.
